Abstract/Key issues: In discussing science parks as boundary crossers, his presentation considers their three broad, but not mutually exclusive functions: 1) ‘land use profitability’, 2) ‘commercialization of the science base’ and 3) as a component of local, or regional or national governments’ strategies designed to foster the growth of indigenous firms and to attract inward investment. (Helen Lawton Smith). Kathrin Peters adds a fourth point namely that in exploring the role of science parks as boundary crossers, the discussion might distinguish between science parks as a ‘tool’ and science parks as an ‘indicator’ of cluster activity.
